Assessment informs instructional practice and should be used in some capacity. Based on results of a comprehensive review of empirical research on whether classroom assessment can benefit learning (in mathematics, science, and English) by Black and Wiliam (1998), Har-len and Winter (2004) offered this summary: [There is] convincing evidence that classroom assessment raises students' attainment when it has these key characteristics: that information is gathered about the processes and products of learning and is used to adapt teaching and learning; that learners receive feedback that enables them to know how to improve their work and take forward their learning; that teachers and learners share an understanding of the goals of particular pieces of work; that learners are involved in assessing their work (both self- and peer-assessment); that pupils are actively involved in learning rather than being passive recipients of information. (p. 390) Some developments have also occurred in student assessment.

The use of a database, spreadsheet, graphic calculator, or scientific calculator can facilitate powerful data analysis. Emotions, learning, and the Brain: Exploring the educational implications of affective neuroscience. This new or “number sense” method of teaching math has things exactly backwards. The Institute of Education Sciences of the United States Department of Education defines English language learners (ELL) as: “Individuals who (1) were not born in the United States or whose native language is a language other than English; or (2) come from environments where a language other than English is dominant; or (3) are American Indians and Alaskan Natives and who come from environments where a language other than English has had a significant impact on their level of English proficiency; and who, by reason thereof, have sufficient difficulty speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language, to deny such individuals the opportunity to learn successfully in classrooms where the language of instruction is English or to participate fully in our society.” Today’s science teachers must be prepared to teach students whose first language is not English.

While I absolutely agree with the value manipulatives play in the classroom and have used them, I am concerned that manipulatives may prevent students from learning abstract thinking skills. If you fail to get basic step one, you are then unprepared for basic step two, and so on and so forth. The other groups were taught using practical scenarios such as combining liquids in measuring cups. Strogatz loves the challenge, “There's something remarkable about working with a group of students who think they hate math or find it boring, and then turning them around, even just a little bit.” What we are doing–and the way we are doing it—results in an enormous sector of the population that hates mathematics.

Why is individual accountability important in cooperative groups? Once you are comfortable with tiering, you might try to tier more than one part in the same lesson. There are many alternative algorithms taught in other countries. For example, we tried in the first study to mark where on the video each mathematics problem started and where it ended, a process that we thought might simplify our task by enabling us to analyze each problem separately. More detailed description of the development of the coding measures and the coding process are provided in Chapter 4.
